WHO IS MUAZZEZ İLMİYE ÇIĞ?
Çığ, whose parents were Crimean Tatars who migrated to Turkey, was born in Bursa in 1914, just a few weeks before the outbreak of World War I. In 1919, at the age of five, during the Greek Army's occupation of Izmir, her teacher father moved the family to Çorum. Çığ completed her primary education here and took French and violin lessons. She entered Bursa Girls' Teacher School in 1926 and graduated in 1931.
In 1936, she began her education in the Hittitology department at Ankara University and graduated in 1940. Starting to work at the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Çığ specialized in Sumerian, Assyrian, and Hittite civilizations. She made significant contributions, especially in the deciphering and publication of Sumerian tablets. Muazzez İlmiye Çığ was also an advocate for secularism and women's rights. Known for her works and writings, Çığ published many books and articles. One of her most important works is her studies on the deciphering and publication of Sumerian tablets.
Her book titled "The Flood in Sumerians, Flood Stories, and Noah's Flood" has garnered great interest. Thiswork provides in-depth information about Sumerian mythology and culture and is one of Çığ's significant contributions in her field of expertise.
